If you have ever had a project from hanging a picture to leveling a excavation site a laser level makes the job so much easier. The particular laser level we are referring to is the self leveling kind that can show a laser in multiple directions. Adding an optional sensor allows for use outside in the daylight when the laser light is difficult to see.
This is probably something I should have purchased years ago but this large project made me finally bite the bullet and get one. In today’s world there are many options and varieties of these things. Many you will find online are not really professional grade and should probably be treated as they were designed for hobby use. In the end this type is perfect for my needs.
Picking a Laser Level
I began my search like so many of us, on Amazon. Immediately you realize there are many strange named items that could all be potentially the best one. Some items are very cheap while some expensive. Personally, I look for an item that comes from a brand’s store. I’ve found that most products that have a formalized brand seem to be more legitimate and have better quality.
Huepar
In truth I’ve never heard of this brand but they had many products and many reviews on them. Most reviews were excellent so I made the decision to buy. They have several options of kits, some simple some extensive.
I purchased the 3 axis laser level that came with a mount, a case and usb charge cable. In addition I purchased the laser sensor so this could be used outside in daylight.
Using the Laser Level
Perhaps the hardest part of using the laser level is figuring out which switches and buttons get the unit working in the way you are looking for. The side switch locks the laser and shuts off the device while the top buttons change the direction of the laser and the laser operation. The laser has a standard thread hole on the bottom that will attach to most tripod mounts. A regular camera tripod works perfectly. Getting the level close to actual level is all that’s needed. The level will self level itself within reason.
A simple use in the case of the pics shown is to establish level on a large flat outdoor surface. The laser level is setup on something sturdy. Attaching something to act as a post, like a ruler or 2×4 to the laser sensor you find the starting height and clamp the sensor to the post. From there you can move around holding the sensor facing the laser. Wherever the bottom of the post is will be level to the starting point.
Wrap Up
There’s just so many uses for the level. I’ve used it outdoors as much as indoors. So far the Huepar level has done everything I’ve needed it to do and the battery seems so good I still haven’t needed to charge it after the initial charge. When you get one you will wonder how you made it so far without one.
