Garage Beer – A Beer Flavored Light Beer Review

I wouldn’t normally do a beer review on a site about garages but when I stumbled upon Garage beer I needed to have it. In truth I never heard of it or heard anything about it. After having a few I did a little research and was kinda surprised.

Garage Beer, a light lager co-owned by NFL brothers Jason and Travis Kelce, has garnered attention for its straightforward approach and rapid growth. Brewed by Braxton Brewing Co in Ohio the beer launched in 2023, the brand aims to deliver a no-nonsense, easy-drinking beer reminiscent of classic American lagers. Sporting 95 calories and 3g of carbs it’s competitive to other light beers.

Taste and Reception by the Web

Reviews of Garage Beer are mixed. A panel from The Philadelphia Inquirer rated it 9 out of 25, noting a polarizing taste profile. While one taster favored it, others criticized its bitter aftertaste and likened its flavor to a slightly more expensive version of Bud Light. Some described it as having a “metal” or “chemically” taste, with one remarking it seemed as if it had “been sitting in a garage” too long.

Conversely, Allrecipes highlighted its appeal to traditional beer drinkers, praising its fuller flavor compared to some mass-market light beers, without being heavy. The lime-flavored variant was noted for its refreshing taste, though it wasn’t part of the Inquirer‘s tasting panel.

Brand Identity and Marketing

Garage Beer positions itself as an independent alternative in the light beer market, emphasizing authenticity and simplicity. The Kelce brothers’ involvement has amplified its visibility, with Jason Kelce actively participating in marketing efforts, including a humorous commercial.

The brand’s marketing strategy focuses on relatability and humor, aiming to create a community around the beer. This approach has resonated with consumers, contributing to its rapid expansion across multiple states.

Availability and Pricing

Garage Beer is competitively priced with other small batch beers, positioning it within the affordable segment of the beer market. Its distribution has expanded significantly, now available in over 30 states.

Review

Garage Beer offers a straightforward, light lager experience that appeals to those seeking a no-frills beer. Personally I am not a light beer drinker, or rather I don’t look for light beers but if I find ones that I like I do buy them simply because of the taste and drinkability. The light of the beer is just a bonus when I find one.

I’m kind of a universal beer drinker, meaning I tend to like everything but I do have some more favorite styles. This kinda makes me pretty objective with any style of beer I might drink. I find this beer to have a nice “regular” beer taste. It’s refreshing and drinkable. It’s a bit bubbly, not super flavorful but it HAS flavor for this style beer and is not watered down. It’s definitely not heavy so it won’t slow you down while working in your garage. The pilsner is pale straw colored with a slightly malt sniff.

Garage beer is far from a cheap light beer but I do think it’s worth the extra money for it’s flavor, I will definitely buy it again. This is the kind of beer to keep on hand when it’s hot and you’re busy and don’t want to lose your momentum. It’s also just a nice drinking beer for any occasion. There’s also a Lime version too…will have to try that.

A last thought is that Garage Beer reminds me of a beer you’d see some guys in the 1970’s, wearing cut-off dungarees, drinking while putting a roof on a friends garage.
